What is a Calorie?
A calorie is a measure of energy which fuels our body. All foods have calories and different foods have different amounts of calories. Calories are provided by carbohydrates, fats & protein.
Without energy our body would not function.
We need at least 1000 to 1400 calories per day to get enough to fuel the key organs and survive. This minimum number is called RMR – Resting Metabolic Rate, which varies depends on age, gender, weight, and muscle mass. However, this is not enough to keep our daily routine activity. We need to add between 400 to 600 calories per day in order to meet our body requirements.
If you go over the number your body requires, you will gain weight. It takes an excess of 3500 calories to gain 1 lb of fat. For example, if your body needs 1800 calories a day to maintain your current weight, and you consume 2300 calories a day, then by the end of the week you would gain 1 lb.
Obviously, in order to lose weight you need to reduce the number of calories consumed. The challenge is how to lose weight while staying healthy.
Moderation is the key to success, along with moderation and exercise you will be able to achieve your goal and maintain healthy weight for long period of time. Calories support you more than you think, so making better food choices will support your health longer.
